Post with 2 notes
I drove for hours today. Enough time to really take in what I was seeing around me, and think about it all.
Iowa was where something really struck me. The whole state is farmland. Fields and fields of flat, clear cut, chemical dependent soil. These fields all grow corn and soybeans, some of the most subsidized crops in the nation. I am getting angry at how much corn is grown in this country. Most of it goes to make animal feed for feedlots. What people do not usually realize is that this practice of constant chemical fertilization and monoculture farming is going to turn the Midwest into a desert. If all the farmland around me were to stop producing adequate crop yields then it would be lights out for most of America’s foods. People don’t know how dependent the United States is on corn. A simple grass holds a great amount of power. Fast food chains would disintegrate, meat prices would soar, the chemical industry would lose one of its main sources of raw materials, especially in food chemicals.
There is an interesting parallel to the Mayan calendar in this. The current 5000 year cycle (the one that is ending and causing a panic) is defined by the “corn people” who are notably too intelligent. You can see it everywhere, people are too smart. No one trusts others, people judge others and help themselves first. Its too smart, we need more heart and less corn.
